Wholesale Cactus Buying Guide: Sizes, Photos & Quotes
Buying wholesale cacti from China? Learn how to specify plant sizes, review batch photos and compare quotations before sending your cactus buying list.

For importers, nurseries and garden centers, a useful wholesale cactus quotation starts with a clear specification. A photograph may show the form you like, but it does not tell a supplier the quantity, acceptable size range or shipment format you need. This guide explains what to include when sourcing wholesale cacti from China and how to review the response.
1. Specify the plant, not just the pot
Use a botanical name when you know it. If you only have a trade name, add clear reference photographs and explain which features matter: a rounded form, column height, branching habit, spine appearance or a particular silhouette. Ask the supplier to confirm plant identity before you agree to an order.
Pot diameter and plant diameter are different measurements. For rounded cacti, give the target plant diameter and say whether spines should be included in that measurement. For columnar plants, specify plant height and whether the measurement excludes the pot. Include units and an acceptable range rather than an ambiguous label such as “medium.”
- Retail assortments: state whether plants must fit a particular pot or display space.
- Nursery batches: describe the size range and the consistency you need across the batch.
- Selected specimens: identify the shape or individual plant features that determine your choice.
A tighter size range can reduce the number of suitable plants. Tell us which requirements are essential and which can be adjusted if the original selection is unavailable.
2. Review photos against the specification
A catalog image is a starting point for discussion. Before ordering, ask what the quoted photographs represent: a reference plant, a representative batch or individually selected plants. For a batch order, a wider photograph helps you judge consistency; close-ups help you review visible condition and the features your customers expect.
When size is important, request a photograph with a ruler or another clearly identified scale. Ask for the date of the photos and confirmation that the photographed selection corresponds to the quoted size range. If individual plants are selected, agree how they will be identified on the order list.
Photographs cannot establish every aspect of plant health. Use them alongside the written specification, preparation method and any inspection or document arrangements agreed for the shipment.
3. Compare the complete quotation
Compare offers using the same plant size, quantity, presentation and destination. A lower plant price may refer to a smaller size range or a different packing format. Request a line-by-line response so you can see what is confirmed and what still needs discussion.
| Quote item | What to check |
|---|---|
| Plants | Identity, size range, quantity and agreed alternatives. |
| Packing | Bare-root or potted format, protection and any separate packing charge. |
| Shipment | Destination, transport arrangement and which freight costs are included. |
| Documents | Required paperwork, what can be arranged and any quoted charges. |
| Final total | Currency, payment method and the agreed scope of the invoice. |
For packing decisions, read our bare-root versus potted plant shipping guide. Do not assume a plant price includes freight or import-related costs.
4. Send a buying list that can be quoted
A spreadsheet or a short message can work. Put each plant on a separate line and include its name or photo reference, target measurement, quantity and any substitution preference. Add the destination country, city or port, preferred shipment format and your target purchasing period.
Example request format: “Reference photo A; plant diameter measured without spines; target size range in centimeters; quantity required; bare-root preferred if suitable; destination country and city.” Replace each field with your actual requirements. This gives the supplier a practical basis for checking availability.
